Lecture T/Th 1:50-2:40; plus discussion section
This course uses Election 08 as a prism for considering contemporary social, political, and economic challenges to a “healthy America,” integrating philosophical reflection with interdisciplinary approaches. Guest speakers and other community engagement will contribute to the course. The course will address questions such as:
- What is health? The absence of disease? Acute medical care? Preventive health care? Mental health care? Social structures promoting health? (The recent tagging of obesity as an “epidemic” provides a case study addressing these questions.)
- Health justice? What are we to do as the health care finance system staggers with increasing numbers of uninsured/underinsured, continuing health care inflation, and mounting demographic pressures? What is just or fair allocation of health care resources? What health care reform proposals are being discussed in election forums?
- Government’s role? How are questions of state authority being transformed by stem cell debates and concern for public health preparedness following 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina?
