George & Agnes Greenleaf
International Experiences Scholarship
George and Agnes Greenleaf established an endowed fund known as “The George and Agnes Greenleaf Scholars Enrichment Fund” to benefit worthy and capable students enrolled at Michigan State University in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and, specifically The Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program.
This fund is intended to encourage students in the Bailey Scholars Program who have the demonstrated capacity to achieve education and professional goals, and are motivated to achieve these goals through the extra effort of travel and/or work/study abroad. The Greenleafs’ goal for this fund is to encourage these young people to enter into study and/or internships in other countries, and to see overseas travel experiences as an educational resource of high quality. They sincerely felt that personal opportunities in this coming century will plainly focus on the community of the world more than most people can begin to comprehend.
The Greenleafs are from the rural areas of Ionia County and both began teaching in one-room rural schools in Ionia County while still in their teens. George Greenleaf graduated with a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1959 following his Bacheor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1943. They were convinced in the educational value of travel experiences even as they brought up their own family, trailering together over the 48 states of the United States and several provinces of Canada and Mexico.
The Greenleafs and members of their family have visited over twenty countries; while George Greenleaf has been around the world twice in his work with the grain industry. Greenleaf has twice been a faculty member of this university; in 1946 and again in 1954 through 1959. His solid belief, along with Agnes, in the value of internships and travel as a path to a quality college education are shown by his scholarship program requirements at another state agricultural institution and his many years of leadership in the areas of internship requirements at Agricultural Technical Education institutions during his career.
George Greenleaf was a successful agricultural association executive in the area of grain, feed and agricultural chemicals for 25 years and has received many honors including the Degree of Honorary American Farmer from the Future Farmers of America; and was elected to Ohio’s Agricultural Hall of Fame. He earned his Certified Association Executive from the American Society of Association Executives and served as an infantry officer in both World War II and the Korean War. George and Agnes are Life Members of the Michigan State University Alumni Association. They believe in the motto: “Pay forward as you cannot pay back.” The Michigan State University experience gave them opportunity and the vision to follow their dreams.
This scholarship is funded by The George and Agnes Greenleaf Scholars Enrichment Fund, and is awarded the spring semester of each year. It is open only to Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Students who are in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and engaging in educational/internship experiences outside of the United States, and can only be utilized for travel, lodging and fees associated with the students’ participating in professional conferences, seminars, and meetings; or work, study or travel abroad connected to a course of study facilitated by University faculty. An extended period of travel time is encouraged for the recipient to enable a broadening experience along with the formal requirements of the overseas study arranged by the University, its faculty and others. The number of awards varies, and depends upon the funds available and the number of applicants.
Frank A. and Kathleen L. Fear
Bailey Student Experiences Scholarship
An endowment was established to benefit worthy and capable students enrolled at Michigan State University in the College of Natural Resources and, specifically, in The Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program The Bailey community named this endowment in Frank and Kathleen’s honor to support student activities.
Frank and Kathleen Fear have both had distinguished careers in higher education. In 1995, Frank, who was serving as the Chairperson of Resource Development, was asked by the Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to create a unique learning environment for students in the College. Under Frank’s leadership working with a diverse group of faculty, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program emerged. Frank served as the first Chairperson of Bailey, from 1997-2000, and remains active in the learning community in his current role of Senior Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Kathleen Fear has also been affiliated with the Bailey Scholars Program, especially during her tenures of service as education department chairperson at Albion College and, later, as Academic Dean (Provost) at Olivet College. Kathy brought enthusiasm and commitment to her interactions with Bailey Scholars.
This endowment funds the Frank A. and Kathleen L. Fear Bailey Student Experiences Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to encourage students who have the demonstrated capacity to achieve educational and professional goads, and are motivated to achieve these goals to further their education.
